The salt-covered red sandstone in one section of Gold Butte was a fantastic area to explore and photograph this past January. I love the patterns formed by thin layers of sandstone, and I was thrilled to find this pattern which is a perfect example of two-dimensionl contour lines for a saddle point and a minimum in three-dimensional space. Yes, that's my engineering background coming out. The pattern also makes a rather interesting image.

XMP Template Files in Photoshop CC

I recently discovered a problem with with the XMP template files that are created by Photoshop CC. There's an entry for the "Date Created," and the value is assigned "0000." That caused problems when I went to upload images to a site that extracts the "Date Created" from the image file because the site didn't understand the date. Photoshop CS6, and earlier, has a slightly different problem in that it assigns the value for the "Date Created" in a new template to be either the date of the image that's open when the template is created or the date when the template is created. I didn't look into which date is used because both are wrong for my needs.

Fortunately, there's a rather straight-forward fix to prevent Photoshop from changing the "Date Created" value in the XMP data for the image when the XMP template is applied. Just edit the XMP template file, and remove the line that contains "photoshop:DateCreated". The location of the XMP template files can be found via the XMP editor (File > File Info…). Go to the pop-up menu where you'd select the XMP template file to assign, and select "Show Templates Folder." You can then edit the offending XMP files using your favorite text editor.

Clarification on April 18, 2014

I think the errant "Date Created" value is entered in the XMP template file because I enter data for the "State/Provence" and "Country" fields on the Origin tab. There's a "Date Created" field at the top of that tab, and I don't enter anything in there.
