Ngorongoro Crater is a good place to see the critically endangered eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) because of the relatively flat and mostly grass-covered terrain. However, they're quite shy and prefer to stay far from the road system on which visitors must remain. Sometimes, like on my recent photo safari in February, a black rhino comes close to the road so it can cross into another safe-from-human-visitor area. It's these close encounters which are great for photography. The animals in the background are cape buffalo.
