Lion Cub in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The eighth day of my safari in Tanzania, and the first in the southern Serengeti, was a bit slow compared to the above-average days preceding it.

We went to the Gol Kopjes, an area that has been good for lions and cheetah on my previous visits. A kopje, Dutch for "little head," is a small rock outcropping in the vast sea of grass in the Serengeti. Lions like to perch atop the rocks to survey the area and cheetahs like the vast grasslands to hunt.

The day was slow because of the cloud layer and rain in the morning. Our first good encounter was two lioness and three cubs at a kopje. We arrived just in time to watch and photograph the cubs crossing a low section of the kopje as they were headed to a secluded spot high on the kopje where they escaped the paparazzi.

We didn't see any cheetah and only saw two other groups of lions: one with two male and three females, and an other with four females. We did have a nice opportunity to photograph some bat-eared fox.
